Onstage Injury Sidelines Annie Title Star Lilla Crawford

The sun will come out next week for Lilla Crawford, the title star of the Broadway revival of Annie. “Crawford suffered a minor injury to her foot while onstage at the December 12 matinee performance of Annie," according to the musical’s press representative. She is expected to return to the production next week.

As Broadway’s new Annie, Crawford is the youngest of the five nominees for Broadway.com’s Star of the Year for 2012. The Los Angeles native made her Broadway debut in 2011, playing cheeky dancer Debbie Wilkinson in the closing cast of the Tony-winning musical Billy Elliot.

Inspired by the famous comic strip Little Orphan Annie, the musical first opened on Broadway on April 21, 1977 and ran for 2,377 performances. The show, which follows a young Depression-era orphan sent to live with the rich and famous Daddy Warbucks, features music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin and a book by Thomas Meehan. Annie’s Tony-winning score includes classics like “Tomorrow,” “Easy Street,” “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile” and “Maybe.”
